Course: Evaluating Outsourcing Alternatives

Duration: 2 days; registration at 8:00 AM day one, class begins at 8:30 AM; class ends at 4:00 PM final day.

Overview: The majority of organizations now outsource at least one product or function; unfortunately, many outsourcing decisions are based solely on price/cost and fail to deliver the expected results. This course shows how to examine strategic, process and vendor capability factors in defining outsourcing candidates, evaluating vendors and constructing shared-win agreements.

Who should attend: Operations managers, process improvement champions, systems analysts, materials and distribution managers, low cost sourcing managers

Agenda:

Defining the case for outsourcing

  • Determining internal strategic skills, processes, products and core competitive advantages

  • Defining outsourcing advantages: leverage supplier technology and competencies, reduced cycle time, focus internal resources, other

  • Challenges in identifying true cost savings and impacts

  • Functional areas: design, operations, information systems, finance/HR, distribution, logistics, fulfillment, other

  • Individual operations or products vs. families, systems, processes

  • Typical industry-specific considerations and examples

Evaluating vendor candidates

  • Defining key vendor technical, product, company competencies and advantages and abilities to grow

  • Considerations with offshore partners and trade programs 

  • Impacts of increased reliance on key vendors

  • Subjective and objective vendor characteristics: quality certifications and improvement programs, use of best practices, culture, other

  • Vendor supply chain and tier 2/3 supplier capabilities

Implementing shared-win partner agreements and systems

  • Defining the hard numbers: price, delivery performance, quality levels, service level agreements (SLA), other

  • Building in flexibility: volume, timing, product requirement changes

  • Security and confidentiality parameters

  • Rewards, penalties and avoiding adversarial relationships

  • Examples of typical outsourcing agreements

Each area includes: Typical policy issues, glossary, case study or exercise.

Fee: $955 US for 2 days; $785 per person when 2 or more attend from same company. Includes materials and handouts, continental breakfast, lunch and coffee service but not dinner, lodging or transportation.
